How it works
A workspace admin can turn on Vanish Messages for direct messages, group chats, and external partner conversations, and choose how long a message should stay visible before it's gone — 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 24 hours.
Once it's on, every new message in that conversation carries its own, real countdown. You'll see exactly when it's set to vanish, right in the chat. When the time is up, the message disappears — not just marked as deleted, but genuinely removed, for everyone in the conversation, in real time.
What it's for — and what it isn't
Vanish Messages is scoped to where it actually matters: direct messages, group chats, and external partner threads. It deliberately doesn't apply to Circles, Announcements, or Broadcasts — places where a message is meant to be a lasting reference for the people who need it, not a fleeting exchange.
We also made sure the choice to enable it isn't casual. Turning it on comes with a clear, upfront disclaimer: once a message vanishes, it cannot be recovered. Every member of the conversation sees the same real notice, so nobody is surprised by content disappearing.
Built with the right guardrails
Every setting change is logged, with a real, visible history any admin can review. And critically, the timer for a message locks in the moment it's sent — even if an admin changes the vanish duration later, messages already in flight keep the timer that was in effect when they were sent. No message quietly changes its own rules after the fact.
Why we built it this way
We didn't want Vanish Messages to feel like a gimmick bolted onto the chat window. It's meant for the real, ordinary moments where a team needs to share something time-sensitive — without needing to manually delete it afterward, or wondering if it's still sitting somewhere it shouldn't be.
